"I told coach Stroud about the decommitting," Culliver said. "I don't think he wanted me to do it, but I think he understands. He said if I really have to do it then I should if I feel that is what's best for me.
"It's not that I just decommitted from State to commit to another school, it's about me not really worrying about where I'm going yet. I'm telling coaches that they can still recruit me and everything, but I'm not even trying to worry about schools or recruiting right now."
Culliver visited NC State numerous times this spring, including stops on campus for the June and July camps. Most recently he made the short drive over to attend the Wolfpack's invite-only camp where he had a chance to speak with head coach Chuck Amato. Is NC State still in the mix?
"Oh yea, I told coach Stroud that I'm still going to look at NC State," Culliver said. "They are the in-state school, and they were the first school to offer me. I talked with coach Amato at the camp, and he knows about me visiting other schools.
"They are definitely still in it, but I just wanted to not even have that pressure. I've been getting calls all the time and getting asked to go to their school. People have even been sending me stuff to autograph. I just need to not even be worrying with recruiting right now."
Culliver, who burst on the scene this spring with a string of impressive combine performances, now holds offers from Wake Forest, East Carolina, NC State, North Carolina, State, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Clemson. However, at this time he prefers to not list a top five and insists that he is wide open.
"I can't say who I'm really interested in," he said. "I'm trying to focus on my senior season and not worry about recruiting. I think I'm going to take official visits in January and decide after that.
"It's really going to come down to friendship and how the coaches treat me."
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound safety mentioned that he is likely done with unofficial visits, as his senior season is coming up. However, he did leave the door open for another trip.
"I might make one trip with [Josh] Oglesby to Virginia Tech, but other then that I don't think I'll take anymore until my official visits."
