4-Star WR Getting Close to a Decision?

According to his father Mordecai, Jay Smith may be looking to make a decision sometime soon. The top receiver in the state of Virginia, Smith, a four-star prospect, had wanted to make a commitment by October 26th – his birthday. Could a decision come earlier than the late October date?

"That's the tentative date, but, just from reading Jay, I think he wants to end this thing," Mordecai Smith said. "I think he's going to end it real soon. I know he's excited about the visit to Virginia Tech and I know he's real excited about the visit to Raleigh. Somewhere in there, I have to get him to Miami and I have to get him to Notre Dame. Those are the main four he's talking about right now."

Jay has scheduled an official visit to Virginia Tech for the weekend of September 30th and will follow that up with a visit to N.C. State the following week for the Florida State game (on October 5th). Nothing has been scheduled to either Miami or Notre Dame. Other programs, including Clemson, Florida, Michigan State, Tennessee, and, more recently, USC, have talked about trying to get Smith to visit as well.

"The phone calls have been from everywhere," Mordecai said.

"I do get the sense that he wants to end this thing, though. I think he wants to be able to focus on academics and he also wants to be able to help his team recruit."

In addition to recruiting, Smith is focused on playing for his new school – Lake Taylor in Norfolk. The 6-4, 200-pound receiver helped the Titans to a 46-0 win last week, giving the team a 1-0 record.

"Technically, he showed that he is definitely dominating at his position," Mordecai said of his son's performance. "He ran a couple of stop-and-gos that put the defensive backs primarily on the ground. He took a two-point conversion in. I liked that play. They gave him the ball on a rush and he wasn't even touched going around the corner. It was about a 20-yard carry. He showed his speed on that play. His speed has gotten a lot better.

"They dominated on the line of scrimmage, so they didn't have to pass the ball a lot. They didn't throw the football a lot, so Jay did not make any receptions, but from a technical standpoint it's obvious that the quarterback just has to put it in the air. Jay was having the time of his life, though. He's a team-first player, so he wasn't upset. He's all about team."

Lake Taylor head coach Hank Sawyer has been happy with Smith's performance so far.

"Coach Sawyer told me that he knew Jay was a great receiver, but he said the other intangibles," Smith said. "He didn't know about Jay's ability to block and his understanding of blocking. He didn't know how well Jay could run the ball. I think he's going to let Jay return punts in the next game."
