"I'm going to NC State," Smith announced today. "I know coach Lowe, he's a good coach, and I like the campus."
"Tracy Smith is a versatile forward who deserves a huge amount of credit for re-shaping his body and turning from prospect to player," said Scout.com Recruiting Analyst Dave Telep. "He's always been a guy whose best attribute has been his production. I think you can count on him to be a part of the rotation early on and expand his game in time. He begins the season as a Scout.com Top 50 player."
A consensus top 50 player, Smith is rated the No. 13 power forward prospect in the country by Scout.com. The network has also tabbed Smith a four-star prospect and the No. 45 player overall in the class of 2007.
Checking in at 6-foot-8 and 225 pounds, Smith burst on the scene at the 2006 ABCD Camp where he was one of the top players in attendance. Smith averaged 12.6 points (seventh-best overall) and grabbed five rebounds per game, as he was tabbed one of the top 10 players overall by Scout.com. He was also selected to play in the ABCD All-Star Game, and finished with 22 points and eight boards to earn MVP honors.
Smith spent the rest of the summer on the AAU circuit with the Georgia Hurricanes, as he turned it on in Las Vegas at the Big Time Tournament.
After averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds as a junior, Smith plans on making even more of an impact at Mt. Zion this season.
"I'm just trying to be the team captain and the leader," he said. "I know a lot of people are expecting big things out of me so I'm going to do what I've got to do. That is how I'm approaching this year."
Smith received offers from NC State, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Charlotte, LSU, Virginia Tech, and USC among others, but he has decided to attend NC State after narrowing it down to the Wolfpack and Cowboys.
This is a big-time pickup for NC State. Smith, who is versatile and athletic enough to play both forward positions, gives the Wolfpack two big-time frontcourt commitments in Smith and five-star prospect J.J. Hickson. Factor in in-state product Johnny Thomas, and in just over seven months Lowe was able to land two a top-50 player in Smith, a potential McDonald's All-American in Hickson, and an athletic in-state player in Thomas.
Pack Pride will have more on Smith's announcement, including quotes, audio, and photos in the near future so stay tuned!
