Marion (IN) High, led by NC State 2008 commitment Julius Mays, entered its own tournament as the heavy favorite to walk away with the title. The Giants were 5-1 on the season and ranked fourth in Class 4A, but that didn't prevent Jasper(IN), a 3A school that entered the tournament 4-3, from winning the opener.
Jasper was able to pull off the upset because they controlled tempo and Mays had his worst game of the season. The 6-foot-2 point guard had been averaging 21.8 points per game, but he was limited to a season-low eight points on 3-of-11 shooting. Marion lost 38-37 and was held nearly 30 points below its season scoring average.
The Giants needed a big game in the consolation matchup and they responded with a 74-48 blowout victory over Avon (IN) to capture third place.
Mays led Marion in scoring as he talled 21 points and five assists. The 26-point win improved Marion's record to 6-2.
Mays is now averaging 20 points per game. A three-star prospect according to Scout.com, committed to NC State this fall over offers from Indiana and Xavier. He was also receiving heavy interest from Cincinnati and Purdue among others.
