LOI #8: Justin Whaley

Wilson (NC) Hunt lineman Justin Whaley has signed with NC State!

OL/DL Justin Whaley
6-4, 265 pounds
James Hunt High School, Wilson, NC

Prospect Ranking:
Whaley is rated a two-star prospect by Scout.com.

Accomplishments: Whaley recorded 100 tackles and 14 sacks over the past two seasons on defense. He tallied 17 pancake blocks as a senior offensive lineman.

Academics: Whaley projects as a qualifier.

The Recruiting Scene: Another early commitment, Whaley closed his recruitment before some schools may have become involved. He had received interest from Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Duke and Wake Forest but felt comfortable with his decision. He didn't waver when Amato was fired and was confident after the hiring of O'Brien. Whaley took his official visit to Raleigh on Jan. 12.

Scouting Report: NC State has had a lot of success under Chuck Amato when moving high school defensive linemen to the offensive line, and that seems to be the plan for Whaley, a high school defensive tackle. Players such as Shane Riggs, Sean Locklear, Dwayne Herndon, and Leroy Harris all benefited from the move, and like them Whaley has a lot of upside as an offensive line prospect.

A high-motor guy, Whaley plays with great intensity and has good explosion out of his stance. He likes to get into the offensive backfield and disrupt plays while going straight ahead. A lean 6-foot-4 and 265 pounds, he has the frame to put on another 40 pounds after a redshirt year, and projects as an offensive guard on the next level. With quick feet, good strength, and the nasty attitude needed to play in the trenches, Whaley's best days are ahead of him once he makes the permanent move to offensive line.

Here's your chance to catch the Wilson (NC) Hunt star in action!
