Early Top 100 Prospect Likes the Pack

Shelby (NC) Crest linebacker Duane Maddox made Scout.com's early list as one of the top 100 players to watch in 2007. Pack Pride has the lowdown on what he thinks about NC State and where they fall on his favorite's list.

NC State has enjoyed success in the recent past at Crest High School in Shelby, NC. They were able to land tailback Josh Brown back in 2001 and added offensive lineman Andy Barbee in the class of 2005. NC State will be a frequent visitor to Crest again in 2007 and there's little doubt that the Pack coaching staff will be looking to add another Charger to it's roster in the class of 2008.

Linebacker Duane Maddox's name has already been tossed around as a top five caliber player in the state of North Carolina this year. At 6-2, 220 pounds and boasting 4.65-second speed in the 40-yard dash, he racked up 110 tackles and five sacks as a junior en route to conference defensive player of the year honors. Maddox was listed earlier this year by Scout.com as one of the nation's top 100 kids to watch for 2007.

Given NC State's needs at linebacker, there's little doubt as to why Maddox has become a top priority for the Wolfpack coaching staff. The rising senior is a tremendous tackler and shows good fundamentals for a young player. He maneuvers through traffic well and seems to thrive on contact. It would appear his best position in college may be at middle linebacker and he certainly has the frame and ability to excel at that position.

After watching Maddox at camp last summer, it didn't take long for NC State to offer a scholarship- a pledge that the new Pack coaching staff has honored. He has also picked up offers from UNC, South Carolina, Alabama and Clemson.

The Wolfpack's early interest has apparently caught Maddox's eye and the promise of early playing time appears to be a major selling point for the Pack. State's efforts are being headed up by LB coach And McCollum.

"I like State's defense," said Maddox. "They have a lot of tradition over there. I grew up in Durham so I've been watching them for a long time. They told me they had four senior linebackers and I could see early playing time so that caught my attention."

While Maddox has listed NC State as his favorite on occasion, he told Pack Pride there's a trio of schools at the top currently with one other program making a serious run.

"Right now my top schools are Clemson, UNC and NC State," said Maddox. "I don't have any favorites just yet. Another school coming after me is Florida. I've talked to Brandon (Florida LB Brandon Spikes and former Crest player) about them but I haven't talked to him in a while. Doc Holliday (Florida safeties coach) sends me text messages."

Although he's yet to set a timetable for a decision, Maddox knows exactly what he'll be looking for when the time comes.

"I'm looking mostly at playing time, where I feel comfortable and what kind of defensive scheme they run and the coaches," he said.
