State Leads for Maddox

NC State was the first to offer Shelby (NC) Crest linebacker Duane Maddox, and the Wolfpack remain his leader.

Duane Maddox, the 6-foot-2, 220 pound linebacker from Crest Senior High School in Shelby, N.C., said he received an offer from East Carolina on Monday (March 20), bringing the stand-out recruit's offer count up to six. "I was surprised to get the offer from East Carolina last week," Maddox said. "They'd been sending me letters, but I really hadn't talked to them that much. They want me for linebacker too. I don't know that much about the program, but it's nice to see an offer from them."

Maddox, who favors North Carolina State over North Carolina and Clemson, claims to also have offers from all, plus Alabama and South Carolina. "I still like State the best right now. They were my first offer. I got it early last year sometime."

"Alabama offered me last month," he said. "They want me to come down for their spring practice. I'm not sure if I'm going yet or not. I want to take a visit down there sometime thought. I'd really like to meet Coach (Nick) Saban and learn more about the team and the school."

Maddox says Florida has been recruiting him the hardest, but still hasn't offered. "They started recruiting me last year when they were recruiting (linebacker) Brandon Spikes. Coach (Urban) Meyer and Coach (John) ‘Doc' Holliday came to my school and saw me play…I've been talking to them since then. With all the letters I have from them, I could make a novel! Coach Holliday calls and texts me a lot, telling me how great it is to be a Gator and how much they like my style.

"I don't know why they haven't offered yet," he said. "They haven't said anything to me. Coach Holliday wants me to come down there for spring practice on April 2. I'm hoping they might offer then. They would move up pretty high on my list if I got an offer."

With distance being a key issue, Maddox says that he's not really looking at the Irish anymore. "I really haven't talked to Notre Dame at all or got any mail from them. I don't really want to go far away. Four or five hours is good, but that's about it. I'm going to wait until February to commit just in case I get some late offers. I won't rule out anywhere. I want to take my time and let everything marinate before I make my decision."

Maddox reports a 2.8 core GPA. He plans on taking his first-time ACT in June.
