How is the execution coming?
I think they worked really good today. It's hot, the temperature dropped about 10 degrees within the last 15 minutes, but they pushed through it. I think they did a good job.
This program has had some issues with execution. What do you see out there that pleases you and how much work do you have to do in that area?
We've got a lot of work to do still. That's what is going to win football games for us... we're working that in.
That's all we can do right now. It's going to take concentration, a lot of repetitions and until we get that going we're still going to make some of those silly mistakes.
What is your offensive philosophy?
We're going to make you defend from the line of scrimmage to the goalline and from boundary-to-boundary. That's what we're going to try to do, whether it be with the run or the pass.
Thoughts on quarterbacks:
I think all three kids are working hard... [Daniel Evans] has got the advantage, he's played and he's been in games.
He's using that to his advantage right now. The two kids are competing. We won't be able to make a decision probably until we get to game week in August.
What do you like about the quarterbacks?
I like their intensity. They like to compete and they like to play the game. That's very important.
What's the most important characteristic of a quarterback?
Judgement. Without question. You have to have judgement and you have to be able to make the right decision. That's what seperates the great ones from the good ones.
Thoughts on coach Archer and the defensive philosophy:
He's been a 4-3 guy the last couple of years at Kentucky because that's what their personnel dictated it to be... our personnel suits that so that's what we'll operate out of.
That doesn't mean there won't be situational things where we'll go to a three-down lineman defense, but right now we'll probably be more four-linemen than three-linemen.
Do you see anything that you really like?
As I said, I think their work ethic, how they are attacking, their intensity, and how they are working hard... I think that's what I like best.
If they continue to do that, then it's up to us to coach them and get them in a position to win.
Do you have a similar defensive philosophy to what you did at BC?
Not really, we're a little bit different right now. Mike's a little bit different than how we were at BC. There are some differences in coverages and what we're doing up front.
What does coach Archer do differently that you like?
He's more multiple than we were at Boston College, I think that helps.
One of the things, we were never a man-defense football team at Boston College and that's what these kids do best because they've played a lot of it. He's been around the man-concept in the pros and we're doing a little more of that. We never did it at all at BC.
