Spring Scrimmage: Tom O'Brien Audio + Quotes

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Tom O'Brien met with the media following the last scrimmage of spring practice.

Tom O'Brien

Opening Statement:
We had a much better go of it today. The intensity was better, the hitting was much better, so we were much improved than we were a week ago.

We have a long way to go here, we know that. We're going to continue working, look at the tape, and get back on the practice field Monday.

What did you like best?
Last week we didn't tackle well. You probably didn't hear a pad hit another. This week it sounded like we were playing football out there.

That's what I liked best. We tackled much better, we lined up much better on defense. You look at the stats, we created some turnovers which is good.

How do you feel about the linebackers?
It's tough to say. We're rotating so many different guys at so many different things... it's tough to comment on anybody right now. As I said they got lined up better, they were in the right position, and they tackled better. That's a positive.

How much have you done on those type of logistics? Is that still a major issue?
It is. We're playing a lot more zone than they ever did before, and a lot of that has to do with getting lined up, getting in your zone, and playing from there. They were primarily a man team.

Those things were all things we needed to improve on and get better.

Thoughts on the quarterbacks:
Those kids, the same thing. They are doing a few different things than they have done in the past. Evans is still showing his experience and his command of the offense because he has had the same offense. Those other two kids are kind of learning... the whole operation was better today.

Do you expect that competition to continue until the fall?
I expect it to continue all the way until the first game. I don't know if we'll have the opportunity to name a starter. No one has seperated themselves right now, and I didn't expect them to.

Did they all get the same reps?
That's what we've tried to do... they are getting equal number of reps. They are getting the same number of plays, similar type of throws, so we can make some evaluations.

Have you been pleased with the running back play?
Yes, they have been fine. They are tough running backs, they are tough to tackle and bring down. That was part of the problem last week. The defense caught up to them a little better today.

Those kids run hard and that's good.
