CB Eddie Whitley from Butler High School in Matthews, NC projects as one of the top 20 players in the state this year and is a major target for NC State. At this past weekend's Shrine Bowl combine he measured in at 6-0 ½, 169 pounds and ran 40-yard dashes of 4.4 and 4.46-seconds. He also recorded a 31-inch vertical jump. Pack Pride caught up with Whitley for the latest on his recruiting.
Pack Pride: Has all the recruiting attention caught you by surprise?
Eddie Whitley: "It's happened so fast, it's just been overwhelming. I mean, my cousin Norman Whitley, told me to beware of it but I wasn't really listening to him. So now I'm trying to get more tips from him to keep myself humble and to take my time to see what school I want to go to."
Pack Pride: Can you update us on your scholarship offers?
Eddie Whitley: "UNC, NC State, Virginia, Colorado, ECU, Marshall, Duke, Louisville, Vanderbilt- there's about 10 or 11 altogether."
Pack Pride: How about break down who your top schools are right now.
Eddie Whitley: "Virginia, they're showing a lot interest and send a lot of letters to my mom and stuff.
NC State- coach Reid, he was real cool when I went up on my visit. I'm going up there on Wednesday to visit again.
UNC- their coaching staff has so much prestige from the NFL and Miami- you can't get any better than that.
Virginia Tech- I like coach Gray. He's real cool and a fun guy. I'm probably looking at Louisville too but their new coaching staff hasn't shown too much interest in me."
Pack Pride: Are all the schools recruiting you for cornerback?
Eddie Whitley: "Everybody is recruiting me as a cornerback but Virginia Tech, they're looking at me as a free safety but they want to see me in camp to see if I can play cornerback."
Pack Pride: Do you have a preference for staying in-state or going out-of-state?
Eddie Whitley: "My parents want me in-state. My dad prefers NC State or Carolina. My mom, she likes Virginia because of the academics of that school. I'm not one that gets homesick a lot so, it's wherever I feel comfortable with the coaches and the atmosphere has to be real nice."
Pack Pride: Do you have a favorite school right now?
Eddie Whitley: "I have to say, NC State just because coach Reid really blew me away with how cool he was and how laid back he was. He's a real genuine guy. He was just real cool and made me laugh. He wasn't one of those coaches that tries to push onto you. He wasn't trying to force me to like him. A lot of close friends to my family like Mike Quick and Perry Williams went there so I'm probably going to talk to them and they'll probably put some words in my ear."
Pack Pride: "Have you established a timetable for making a decision?
Eddie Whitley: "As the recruiting process goes on, more schools are looking at me. I just got a letter from LSU. I'll probably just wait and sit down with my dad and mom this summer and see what schools I want to set up visits with."
