Whitley Updates Recruitment

E.J. Whitley, safety from Matthews-Butler, (N.C.), is on a team loaded with talent especially in the defensive backfield. Whitley has received several new scholarship offers, and he talks with Scout.com about the latest news with his recruitment.

"I have about 10 offers now," said E.J. Whitley, from Matthews, (N.C.). "My new ones are from Cal, Oregon, Maryland, Illinois and Georgia. I have a few others, but I can't remember them."

"I am not sure who else is close to offering me. I think Central Florida and Purdue may be close. I am hoping Georgia Tech offers. I want to major in architecture. They have a good school."

Whitley is excited about his latest offers as he continued, "I was really impressed with the caliber of teams who have offered me. I would have never thought Cal or Oregon would have offered all three of our defensive backs [Robert Blanton, Spencer Adams] and our quarterback [Jacob Charest]."

"I play with Cal all the time on NCAA football. I love the cornerback [Daymeion] Hughes. I love their defense."

"I talked to coach [Mike] Bellotti from Oregon. He said they were pushing for me really hard. He said I could make an impact on their team."

"Georgia said they need to stack up on defensive backs. It's nice they have offered, but if they are going to offer all these defensive backs I don't know how much playing time I am going to see. If they make a good impression on me I will consider them because I love Georgia."

When asked favorites Whitley said, "I would have to say N.C. State and Virginia Tech are two of my favorites. I have been talking to coach [Jim] Bridge from N.C. State. He is cool. I went up there for an unofficial visit, and I liked it. I am going to go up to Virginia Tech in a couple of weeks."

"North Carolina is up there. Virginia is up there. I went up to Virginia for their Junior Day. My mom likes their academics because she is a teacher. She doesn't want me to be lazy in college. She wants tutors to help push me."

"I like coach [R. Todd] Littlejohn from Cal. I called him, and he is real cool. He is going to make a visit this spring."

"I will probably take my official visits to those five schools."

Whitley knows the time-frame of his decision and who he will seek guidance from in the process.

"I plan to wait until I take all of my official visits," he said. "I am going to take my visits early. I want to have made decision made by the middle of the season before we play Providence and Independence."

"I will sit down with my family and friends to see what would be the best situation for me. I want my parents to be able to come see me play."

Stay with Scout.com as we continue to track the recruitment of E.J. Whitley.
