Play of the game: The Wolfpack ended Friday evening in a 2-2 tie, as play was suspended in the bottom of the eighth. Virginia had a runner on third and none away before rain stopped play. The game didn't restart until Saturday afternoon, and it took just a few pitches for the Cavaliers to cash in that baserunner. Tyler Cannon scored the game winner on a wild pitch by new pitcher Jeff Stallings to give Virginia the first game of the series.
Eric Surkamp (4-3) - 7 IP, 3 Hits, 3 Runs, 2 Walks, 3 Strikeouts
The lefty pitched yet another gem for the Pack but couldn't come away with the win. Surkamp gave up a lead-off triple to Cannon before play was called in eighth, and picked up the loss when Cannon scored nearly a day later.
UVA's Tyler Cannon - 2-2, Triple, SF, 1 Run, 1 RBI
Cannon not only scored the go-ahead run, he also knocked in a run for the Cavaliers in the fifth. With runners on second and third and one out, Cannon lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Patrick Wingfield to give Virginia a 2-0 lead.
Notables: Jake Rule (4-3) picked up the win for the Cavaliers with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless work. Casey Lambert picked up his 10th save with a scoreless ninth. Caleb Mangum plated both Wolfpack runs with a two-run single to center in the sixth inning.
Saturday: NC State 10 (32-18, 13-13), Virginia 7 (39-11, 17-8)
Play of the game: Already up 5-0 going into the fourth, the Wolfpack tacked on another three runs in the inning to make the score 8-0 in favor of the Pack. Ramon Corona and Marcus Jones each had RBI singles, while Caleb Mangum added a sacrifice fly in the inning.
Marcus Jones - 3-4, Triple, 1 Run, 2 RBIs, SB
Jones, batting fifth for the Pack on Saturday, had an RBI triple in the first inning as the Pack jumped out to an early lead. He also singled in the second inning and added an RBI single in the fourth.
Dallas Poulk - 4-5, 2 Triples, 3 Runs, 1 RBI
Poulk was the quintessential lead-off man for the Pack on Saturday, wrecking havoc with his speed and hitting. The freshman started the game with a triple to right center and scored the first run of the game on a sac fly. He added an RBI single in the second, walked in the fourth, singled in the fifth, and capped the day off with another triple in the seventh.
Notables: Jimmy Gillheeney (4-2) picked up the win in relief of Andrew Brackman, who went just four innings. Gillheeney got the win despite giving up four runs in 2 2/3 innings. Eryk McConnell picked up his ninth save, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings to halt the Cavaliers comeback attempt. Matt Payne had three hits and scored two runs, while Pat Ferguson was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate.
Sunday: NC State 8 (33-18, 14-13), Virginia 6 (39-12, 17-9)
Play of the game: With the game tied in the top of the eighth inning, two walks put two runners on base with two outs for Ryan Pond. The junior right fielder delievered, slapping a two-run single down the left field line to take an 8-6 lead and capture a much-needed series win over the No. 3 ranked team in the country.
Tommy Foschi - 2-3, Home Run, 2 Runs, 3 RBIs
With Ramon Corona taking a rare day off, the shortstop took advantage with a three-run homer in fourth inning, helping the Wolfpack take a a 5-2 lead. He also walked and scored in the eighth inning and added a single in the ninth.
Jeremy Synan - 3-4, 1 Run, 1 RBI
The left fielder tacked on three hits for the Pack in the series-deciding game. Synan picked up a single in the fourth, doubled in the fifth and singled again in the seventh.
Notables: Eryk McConnell shut the door on the Cavaliers for the second straight day, pitching two scoreless innings for his 10th save of the year. Andrew Taylor got the win, pitching 1 1/3 innings of relief. Dallas Poulke and Drew Martin each had two hits for the Wolfpack in the win.
