After being named the MVP of the Scout.com Combine held in Randolph, NJ, DE Leon Mackey has seen his stock soar in recent weeks. That effort, combined with another super performance at a Nike Camp have led to scholarship offers from NC State, Tennessee, Temple, Pittsburgh and Buffalo with more likely to follow.
Despite playing primarily offensive tackle for Christiana High School in Newark, DE, Mackey has been rated a four-star prospect at defensive end by Scout.com. At 6-4, 278 pounds, the rising senior has tremendous 4.7-second speed in the 40-yard dash and that has college coaches salivating over his prospects on defense once he transitions to college.
NC State defensive back's coach Mike Reed made a whirlwind tour of the northeast recently and Mackey was one of several prospects he made a priority to check on while on the road. He wasted no time in making an offer to Mackey and an early impression on the fast-rising defensive end.
"Actually the coaches at State had seen me at the Nike Camp," said Mackey. "Coach Reed came by the school and they offered me right after that. I really like coach Reed. He's from my area so I can definitely relate to him. I don't know a lot about NC State right now but they are one of my top schools."
The program that NC State finds themselves chasing is Tennessee. The Vols have also offered and Mackey made it clear that they sit atop his leader board currently.
"Tennessee is my number one school right now," he said. "I really like coach Slade and the head coach called me on my cell phone last week. I like the fact that they have a specific coach for defensive ends and the SEC has always been my favorite conference. But I really like the chemistry I have with coach Slade."
Despite Tennessee holding the early lead, the Pack is still in the race and Mackey said he has three schools at the top of his list for now.
"Right now, Tennessee, NC State and Pittsburgh are my top schools," he said.
Mackey said he's undecided on any camp trips currently and doesn't have a timetable for a final decision.
