Pack Pride will take a weekly look at how NC State may recruit the various positions for the class of 2008 and the prospects that are currently mentioning the Pack as one of their top schools. The following should be considered a rough guide only as many factors will affect the actual numbers at each position between now and signing day next year. All information contained in this article is the opinion of the staff at Pack Pride and should not be confused as being information from the coaching staff at NC State. It is also based on information known at the current time. Several aspects of this listing will certainly change as the recruiting season progresses.
Key losses...Miguel Scott
Pack is likely to sign...1-3
Number signed at this position over the last two years...3
How important is this spot in relationship to other positions...Moderate
How does the Pack's recruiting pool look: Grade B
Based on sheer numbers, the safety position doesn't appear to one of the more pressing needs for the class of 2008- especially when you consider that State already has a commitment from ATH Earl Wolff who could project at S or WR. The Pack has offered several prospects but realistically has a ways to go to really become a major player for any of them. Like the cornerback position, we expect that you'll see several new names emerge at this spot before all is said and done.
Pack Pride's Dream Recruiting Class at Safety...Earl Wolff, Spencer Adams
On the board and listing the Pack:
Earl Wolff....NC State commitment, Wolff absolutely stole the show at NC State's camp displaying a tremendous combination of physical ability and football talent. He could realistically end up at safety or wide receiver once he arrives in Raleigh next fall.
Vance King...King has been somewhat under the radar but we believe State has offered and is pursuing him pretty hard. He has been very non-committal when naming favorites so it's hard to say exactly where the Pack may stand right now. We hope to be in touch with him in the very near future and will hopefully have more on just how serious he is about NC State.
Brandon Smith...Smith is a talented two-way athlete out of New Jersey that has listed State in his top five. Michigan and Rutgers appear to be very strong in the race but Smith says he plans to take several visits before making a decision. At this point we know State is interested but just how much is still unclear. We should know a little more about how hard the Pack will be pursuing Smith in the coming weeks.
Okechuckwu Okoroha...Okoroha is a big-time safety prospect out of Maryland that the Wolfpack has offered. He has been fairly vague in naming favorites and he will likely make several official visits before committing to a school. It is not known if State is a major player right now but the good news is there appears to be plenty of time for the Pack to work their way into the race for his services.
Spencer Adams...Adams is probably the top defensive prospect out of the Butler High School trio that includes Robert Blanton and Eddie Whitley. State has consistently been mentioned as one of Adam's top five schools but the distance between Clemson and UNC and the rest of his favorite's list appears to be pretty vast. The Pack will have major work to do if they hope to become a serious player. First and foremost will be to get Adams on campus to some games this fall.
E.J. Fields....Like Wolff, a versatile athlete with a great combination of size and speed. He visited State back in the spring but we didn't get the feeling that he was blown away with the trip. It's unknown currently whether Fields is still a major target for State but he has picked up several new offers and schools like Purdue, Kentucky and Wisconsin look like strong candidates.
