But in the hierarchy of the college football world Brown holds a rank just below head coach Tom O'Brien and his assistant coaches. Tom O'Brien thought he had the perfect nickname for his new place kicker. Alas, there was a small problem when N.C. State's coach started calling Steven Hauschka the "Polish rifle." Hauschka's not Polish. "He told me he's German, so I've got to rethink my thought there," O'Brien said. "I'll have to get another name for him." Whatever that turns out to be, Hauschka -- whose last name is pronounced Howsh-kuh -- will be a key figure for the Wolfpack when it opens its season against Central Florida on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Massachusetts native will replace three-year starter John Deraney as the man N.C.
