Practice Report: Andy McCollum

Linebackers coach Andy McCollum discusses the growth of his unit over the course of the season going into the final game against Maryland this Saturday.

Andy McCollum

On freshman Nate Irving
"Nate is a very smart football player. He sees things well – each week he's gotten better and better and has gotten a lot more playing time."

On true freshman Thomas Barnes
"He's another one that's got a natural knack for it. But he's immature in some ways and still has a lot of growing up to do. But if he continues growing, making strides on and off the field, he's got a chance to be a real good player."

On Ray Michel and John Ware
"He made a big play last week on the fumble and has done some good things. He has to overcome the size part of it but he's been probably one of our most valuable special teams guys the whole year."

"Ray has the physical ability, Ray has the work ethic – Ray wants to be good. He's stepped in and made some plays backing up James Martin so I've been pleased with the growth of both of them."

On the seniors
"Their attitude has been tremendous – they have been a pleasure to coach. They listen, they want to learn, they bought into the program. Each week they try to go out and be better."

"You wish you could have coached them four years. It seems like just the other day I walked in and met them for the first time."
