Mackey Talks Four Finalists

NC State has been pursuing four-star defensive end Leon Mackey for over a year now, and he is starting to close in on making an annoucement. The Hargrave standout has cut his list to four and has one official remaining.

Since transferring to Hargrave Military Academy Leon Mackey has been working on his academic situation, but he has also continued to sculpt his body and work on his game, getting his weight down to a lean 255 pounds and his 40-yard dash time down to 4.6 seconds.

The 6-foot-4 defensive end has a final four of North Carolina, Florida State, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech and plans to make his decision by or on signing day.

Florida State: "I got to meet Head Coach Bobby Bowden on my official visit there and thought he was a very cool, very genuine person. He said that he liked my character which was important to me because it's something I pride myself on. I told him I don't expect anything to be handed to me, I just expect the opportunity to work hard and prove myself so that I can earn playing time. I really like the atmosphere in Tallahassee and had very good chemistry with both the players and coaches there. The Seminoles also put a bunch of players in the NFL which is very enticing to me."

North Carolina State: "Coach Mike Reed is my recruiting coordinator and has been with me since I was back at Christiana High School. He's originally from Delaware and used to coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, so we have some things in common in terms of the area we're from. He talked to me a lot about the chance to start for the Wolfpack as a true freshman. I also really like the defensive line coach Keith Willis because he is a spiritual man and has a strong believe in God. Head Coach Tom O'Brien has the program on the right track and I see them rising up very soon. There is a nice atmosphere down there and it's just a nice little college town."

Virginia Tech: "I'm taking my official visit there this weekend and am looking forward to seeing everything in person. I like the success they've had over the years and how many defensive players they put in the NFL. I have good chemistry with Coach (Bryan) Stinespring and Coach (Charley) Wiles as well."

North Carolina: "Head Coach Butch Davis is a great guy, as is their defensive line coach John Blake. They are both very humble, very honest men and are easy to talk and relate to. Coach Davis treats all of his players equally and there isn't any animosity amongst the players there because of that. North Carolina has a family atmosphere and I really enjoyed hanging out with guys like Marvin Austin and Greg Little."

At this point Mackey is playing his recruiting close to the vest publicly, but privately does have a favorite in this race.
