Jones Shuns Noles, Sticks With the Pack

Pack Pride talks with Hargrave Military Academy offensive lineman Sam Jones after he makes a surprise official visit to Florida State.

More than a few Wolfpack fans grew anxious this weekend when word leaked out that NC State commit Sam Jones had made an official visit to Florida State. The four-star offensive lineman had reportedly been solid in State's corner for weeks so the impromptu visit came as a surprise. However, Pack Pride contacted Jones at Hargrave Military Academy on Monday and he was quick to erase any doubt about where he intends to play his college football.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm definitely still committed to State," said Jones. "My dad actually had a doctor's appointment and since we were in Florida we went out for a visit. I go back a long ways with Chuck (Amato) and he just asked for us to take a look at them before signing day. So we did but it wasn't a big deal. I'm still committed to State. I've already let the coaches at State know that I'm solid because they were asking me this morning. In fact, coach O'Brien was up here today so I let him know."

Jones will now turn his attention to finishing out the school year and arriving in Raleigh next summer to join the Wolfpack football squad.

The 6-5, 280 pound lineman has the potential of playing either guard or tackle for NC State and was recruited by Special Team's coach Jerry Petercuskie.

Jones isn't the only high priority target at Hargrave for the Pack as they are also in hot pursuit of his teammate, Leon Mackey. Jones said he plans to put in a word or two on State's behalf.

"I haven't seen Leon this morning but he is real quiet and doesn't say a lot when it comes to recruiting. But I think it's basically a battle between NC State and Virginia Tech. I'm definitely going to be talking to him about it."
