Charlotte (NC) Independence High School

Prospect Ranking:
Rated the No. 26 tight end in the nation by Scout.com. Rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com. ESPN.com tabbed Carter the No. 9 tight end in the nation.

Accomplishments: Carter won a state title in 2007 in his first season at Charlotte (NC) Independence, where he started at tight end. He tallied 22 catches for 309 yards and six scores, and he added 10 rushes for 52 yards on the ground. An all-conference selection, Carter was also a vital part of Independence's running game with his lead blocking.

Academics: Carter projects as an academic qualifier.

The Recruiting Scene: One of the first players to commit to the Pack, Carter tore his ACL and MCL - ending his 2007 season. But the three-star tight end has recovered quickly, and plans to make a quick impact for the Pack. "My knee is doing great," he said. "I'm definitely going to see the field next year. There's not going to be a redshirt for me because I'm planning to play as a freshman."

He inked with NC State over offers from South Carolina, North Carolina, Michigan, Marshall, Alabama, Virginia Tech, and Virginia.

Scouting Report: "Mario is a very well-coached, athletic tight end with a world of potential. The Independence offense revolves around his ability to block on the edge and create a seam for the running backs. The back-breaking tight end screens are well suited to Carter's ability to make solid grabs and create some yards after the catch." -- Scout.com Recruiting Analyst Miller Safrit
