Spring Practice Report: Tom O'Brien

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Tom O'Brien met with the media today following the Wolfpack's first spring practice.

"I don't think there's any question we're better than we were last year. Everybody knew where to go, they understood what the drills and periods were. Very fundamental-oriented today... base offense, base defense. I think it went fine."

"You certainly can improve your position by being out here, doing what you can do, and learning and playing fast. We don't make any final decisions really coming out of spring practice but you can certainly impress the coaches one way or another with what you can do."

"There's still a lot of learning going on."

"The advantage we have here is that we have many more walk ons than we're used to having. They help and they do a great job. Three guys won scholarships off of last year's performance."

"I think it's going to be very difficult for them, but that's what today is about. Hopefully before we put the pads on next Tuesday, they'll at least get two days to try and get some semblance of footwork... it's as new to them as anybody on the football field. At least in the case of the redshirt freshmen, at least they lined up basically at the spots that they are in right now."

"Curtis has had a tremendous out-of-season program. He's really changed the way I think he's approached his whole future and I think that's what it is about right now.... he understands that this time next year he's going to be sitting around like all these guys working out for the draft. You can't wait until next year to get things done. Right now you've got to get it done, make sure you're in shape, and work hard. His resume is going to be written next fall and he's done a great job getting himself prepared for this."

"Everybody is going to have an opportunity and we're going to have to rotate guys around and see where we end up."

"He's able to do individuals. If we started spring practice a month from now he'd probably be able to go."

"It's imperative that we can get guys up front that can be play and be physical players."
