TE/HB Tyler Shatley
East Burke High School, Icard, NC
Junior Stats: As a junior, Shatley rushed 213 times for 1,209 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Potential Ranking: Shatley projects as a possible three or four star prospect.
The early word: Tyler Shatley has quickly emerged as one of the premier prospects in North Carolina for the class of 2008. He has a bruising, hard-nosed style combined with above average athleticism which makes him a perfect candidate for an H-back spot, full back or tight end. Clemson was the first school to offer and got a head start on Shatley’s recruiting. Since then, NC State has made a strong push and closed the gap somewhat although the Tigers still maintain a slight lead.
Scholarship offers: NC State, Clemson, Maryland, Wake Forest
Top Schools: Clemson and NC State
Timeline for a decision: Shatley will almost certainly make a decision prior to the start of the 2008 season and it wouldn’t come as a shock if he committed at any point in the near future.
Interesting side-note: While recruited primarily for offense, it has been mentioned that Clemson could move Shatley to defense should he continue to grow. The Pack is recruiting solely as an H-back.
NC State recruiting coach: NC State offensive line coach Don Horton
NC State connections: Shatley reportedly grew up following the Pack and has attended a game in the past. Probably the biggest factor going for NC State is Shatley’s intentions to major in Engineering. His offer count has been kept down somewhat due to him considering only schools that offer his major.
Behind the scenes: It’s no secret that Clemson, led by recruiting ace Billy Napier, is the team to beat. The Pack has been playing catchup for quite a while and it is paramount for them to get Shatley back on campus in order to have a chance to run down the Tigers.
Wolfpack Visits: Shatley attended NC State’s junior day a couple of weeks ago but followed that visit with another trip to Clemson this past week. Although nothing appears set in concrete right now, it appears likely that State will have an opportunity to get Shatley back on campus prior to his decision- most preferably during spring practice.
