Pack Pride will take a weekly look at how NC State may recruit the various positions for the class of 2009 and the prospects that are currently mentioning the Pack as one of their top schools. The following should be considered a rough guide only as many factors will affect the actual numbers at each position between now and signing day next year. All information contained in this article is the opinion of the staff at Pack Pride and should not be confused as being information from the coaching staff at NC State. It is also based on information known at the current time. Several aspects of this listing will certainly change as the recruiting season progresses.
Key losses...Anthony Hill
Pack is likely to sign...1-2
Number signed at this position over the last two years...2
How important is this spot in relationship to other positions...Critical
Ideally, NC State would like to add one tight end in every class. However, this may be a year where the Pack targets two because of losses at the position. Rashad Phillips is still enrolled in school but not listed on the Wolfpack roster currently as he continues his rehab process after injuries sustained in a car accident. RJ Armstrong left the program recently and after the 2009 season, the Pack will be left with just two scholarship tight ends- George Bryan and Mario Carter. Because of a possible shortage at the position down the road, expect NC State to target this spot heavily in 2008.
On the board and listing the Pack:
Paul Carrezola...Neshaminy High School...Langhorne, Pa...offer..Carrezola is another big-time target for the NC State coaching staff. The Pack hosted him for a couple of days during spring practice and really seemed to make a solid impression. Conventional wisdom says that in-state Pittsburgh may be the team to beat although schools like Syracuse, Rutgers and Iowa are in the mix as well. The Wolfpack’s lack of depth at this position may be their big selling point with Carrezola.
Arthur Fontaine...Dartmouth (Ma) High School...offer...Fontaine is a very talented tight end that NC State offered back in February. The Pack is in the mix but in all honesty, probably on the outside looking in. Most consider Boston College to be a strong contender and it appears distance from home could be a consideration. State will have to hope to land a visit over the summer to have a chance but there’s nothing scheduled as of right now.
Logan Thomas...Brookville School, Lynchburg, Va...offer...Thomas is a little different physically than the other tight ends on the board and is almost a hybrid wide-receiver/tight end in the mold of former Wolfpack TE Willie Wright. Thomas has said he isn’t crazy about playing tight end per se but is open to an H-back type role. The Pack has offered but hasn’t gotten a lot of traction as far as making themselves a major player. Although he denies having any favorites, many consider Virginia to be the team to beat.
Matt Milner...Cardinal Gibbons High School, Raleigh, NC...no offer...Milner is a local prospect that has good measurables and speed but likely hurt by the offense he plays in. The camp circuit this summer will likely go a long ways towards helping him land some scholarship offers. NC State likely falls in the boat but we certainly don’t consider Milner to be a longshot to get an offer. We think Wake Forest could be a school to keep an eye out for down the road.
