Shankle: 'I Felt Comfortable'

NC State was one of the first schools to offer Norwood (NC) South Stanly star Terry Shankle a scholarship, and this weekend Shankle was in Raleigh for the Wolfpack's 2008 Spring Game.

"I went to NC State for their Spring Game," said Shankle. "I went up there and talked to their defensive backs coach a lot. He's real nice... he was real down-to-earth.

"I got to watch their game, and I could see myself playing for NC State. I saw a lot of things I liked about them. Their defensive backs get after it, and I liked being around them."

Although NC State has been involved since the beginning of the year, Shankle hadn't been mentioning the Wolfpack as much as some other programs. He stated this visit, his first to NC State, has increased their chances of landing him.

"It helped State a lot," he said. "I went up there because I wanted to see what they had there, and their players and fans surprised me a lot. The thing was I felt comfortable up there around everybody."

Rated a three-star prospect and the No. 17 cornerback in the nation by Scout.com, Shankle is regarded as one of the top ten players in the state of North Carolina. As a junior, he recorded 15 interceptions, returning four of them for touchdowns, and he also returned three punts for scores. On the offensive side of the ball he was extremely dangerous, catching 49 passes for 957 yards and 12 touchdowns from the wide receiver position.

Most schools are recruiting him as a cornerback with a couple of others mentioning the possibility of impacting elsewhere.

"[NC] State is talking about me maybe playing both wide receiver and corner," said Shankle. "That's a good honor because you have to be real good to play both ways in college.

"[North] Carolina wants me as a DB and they want me to return punts and kicks for them. Pretty much all of the others want me at DB."

Shankle claims scholarship offers from NC State, Tennessee, North Carolina, Clemson, Alabamam, South Carolina, Florida, and Texas A&M, and he believes Virginia and Colorado are close to offering.

Don't expect a quick decision.

"If I did have a top five it would probably be Florida, Alabama, Clemson, [NC] State, and [North] Carolina," he stated. "I haven't visited all the schools, but that would be my top five for right now.

"I don't really have a leader. I'll probably take all five of my visits and decide on Signing Day."

Shankle will be in Apex this weekend for the final Shrine Bowl combine of the year and he is signed up to attend the Under Armour Combine held in May.
