'09 Premier Prospect: Tariq Edwards

Pack Pride continues it's look at some of NC State's top prospects for the class of 2009. Today we profile Bennettsville (SC) Marlboro County defensive standout Tariq Edwards.

LB/DE Tariq Edwards

6-4, 230 pounds

Marlboro County High School, Bennettsville, SC

Junior Stats: As a junior, Edwards tallied 81 tackles, four sacks and two interceptions while also seeing some time at wide receiver.

The early word: Edwards is somewhat of a ‘tweener in that he could potentially project at either linebacker or defensive end on the next level. Marlboro County is a high school that seems to produce division one players every year and a program that State will likely be very active with.

Scholarship offers: NC State, Maryland, South Carolina, Vanderbilt

Top Schools: Edwards isn’t publically listing any favorites currently.

Timeline for a decision: Edwards hasn’t set a specific time-frame for making a decision but it wouldn’t be surprising if he made a commitment over the summer.

Interesting side-note: Edward’s father played for Virginia Tech. The Wolfpack is also recruiting Edward’s brother, Tyrell.

NC State recruiting coach: NC State tight end’s coach Jim Bridge

NC State connections: The Wolfpack jumped in the mix when they offered Edwards earlier in April. Recruiting coach Jim Bridge has since made a trip to Marlboro County High School to check on Edwards and the Pack will likely be pushing to get Edwards to their camp this summer.

Wolfpack Visits: Edwards visited NC State for one of their spring practices shortly after the Pack offered earlier this month.

Behind the scenes: Many feel that Virginia Tech could emerge as the team to beat should they offer. It appears that won’t happen until Edwards camps there in June. As things stand now, South Carolina may be the school to beat but we wouldn’t count NC State out in this race. They have some time to boost their chances with this talented defender.
