NC State has placed renewed recruiting focus on the state of South Carolina with tight end’s coach Jim Bridge heading up the Pack’s effort in the Palmetto State. State has been particularly active at Greenwood (SC) High School, first offering all-american DE Sam Montgomery and then following that up with a pledge to S D.J. Swearinger.
At 6-0, 190 pounds, Swearinger tallied 93 tackles, one interception, two blocked punts and two blocked field goals as a junior. On offense he rushed for close to 500 yards and eight scores.
Pack Pride talked with Swearinger and got the latest on his recruiting and where he’s leaning currently.
Pack Pride: DJ, we heard you attended the Nike Camp at Chapel Hill a few days ago. How did you feel like you performed?
“I did pretty good. It was a nice experience. I had like three or four pass breakups so it was a nice experience. I just wanted to go out there and compete with the best and see how I could do against some of the other DB’s that were out there. I’ll be at the Scout combine next weekend.”
Pack Pride: Give us the latest on your scholarship offers?
“Well, Duke just offered me last Friday. I’ve also got Auburn, Vanderbilt, Maryland, NC State and Illinois.”
Pack Pride: Tell us about NC State and what your thoughts are on their football program currently.
“I’ve already visited them. I went there with my coach and two other players. It was a nice experience. Coach Bridge, he’s nice and he really wants me to come down there and play for them. I talked to coach O’Brien and he seems like a nice guy. I like NC State. They’re alright. They like me as a DB and they let me know they need DB’s real bad.”
Pack Pride: How about the in-state schools? Are you hearing much from South Carolina or Clemson?
“The in-state schools aren’t showing a lot of interest. They’re just saying for me to come to camp so I can show them what I can do at this point I’m not really worrying about the in-state schools.”
Pack Pride: You mentioned Auburn and they seem to be a school you have a lot of interest in. What’s your thoughts on the Tigers?
“Right now I love Auburn. It’s an SEC school and they have a great defense every year. They let me know they need safeties and I’m looking to go somewhere that has a top notch defense and they always seem to have a great defense.”
Pack Pride: Who are your top schools right now?
“I would say Auburn, Tennessee and Georgia”
