At the Shrine Bowl Combine held at Apex High School earlier this year, Scotland County (Laurinburg, NC) standout Damonte Terry had one of the top overall performances of any prospect in attendance. Measuring in at 6-0, 189 pounds, Terry ripped off back to back 40-yard dashes of 4.32 and 4.4-seconds. He also recorded an impressive 30.9-inch vertical jump and had 16 reps of 185 pounds on the bench press.
After rushing for 1,125 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior, Terry has emerged as one of North Carolina’s top players for the class of 2009. He boasts an early offer from East Carolina with numerous other schools showing heavy interest. Pack Pride caught up with the rising senior after his recent workout at the invitation only Shrine Bowl combine held at Burlington Williams High School.
Damonte, who are some of the main school you’re hearing from right now?
A whole lot of schools are looking at me now. I’m taking a visit to Maryland and they’ve been coming on real hard. Coach Pearman is a nice guy and he sticks to his word. He said the offer’s most likely on the table when I come up there and he just wants me to come up there and see the school looks and how good the program and academics are. He’s talked to my mother about it and he’s really trying to get me to be a Maryland Terp now.
UNC- I’m hearing a lot from Carolina. I talked to coach Pittman and he said they love me to death. They’re ready for me to come there and they want me to stay for a couple of nights with them and get to know everybody.
East Carolina- I talked to coach Smith this weekend and I really like him. Coach Smith is a real good guy and he knows how to treat people. He’s just on top of his game with what he does when it comes to running backs.
NC State- I talked to coach Bridge. He told me the only thing he wants me to do for him is come up there to a two hour session and just work out. He just wants to talk to me about stuff. The thing about him is, he just wants me to bring my core GPA up. He said that’s basically it because athletically, I’m there.
Some folks have talked about you playing either safety or running back. Is position a big factor for you in college?
No, position doesn’t really matter because I’m a warrior. I mean, I’ll play whatever the team needs me to play and that it all comes down to.
Any schools at the top right now for you?
I don’t have any favorites but in my mind I like three schools off the bat right now. I just want to keep that to myself.
When are you looking to get recruiting behind you?
I haven’t made a decision about that yet. Originally I was looking at making an early decision but it’ll depend on the trips I take.
Terry has attended camp at South Carolina and will be at NC State in a couple of weeks. He has also mentioned attending camps at East Carolina, Virginia Tech and UNC.
