"I actually just committed to NC State," said Ward. "I got off the phone with coach Petercuskie about five minutes ago. He just told me I was their guy, and I was going to get a scholarship. He actually told me this yesterday but my dad was out of town. He just came home so we talked about it and felt it was a great decision so I called then today and told them I'm their guy."
Ward was also receiving heavy interest from Maryland, Georgia, Memphis, and Michigan prior to committing. Several kickers attended the Wolfpack's camp looking to earn an offer, and Ward was the only one who received an offer from NC State and special teams coach Jerry Petercuskie.
At 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, Ward is considered one of the top punters in the southeastern part of the country. He averaged 41.6 yards per punt as a junior, good enough to earn all-county and all-region honors.
A talented athlete, Ward also is his high school team's soccer goalie and starts at point guard for Starr's Mill's basketball squad.
Ward is NC State's fifth commitment in the 2009 class, joining Ashburn (VA) Stone Bridge defensive lineman Brian Slay, High Point (NC) Central linebacker Ricky Dowdy, Lancaster (OH) linebacker Ryan Cheek, and Orlando (FL) Boone tailback James Washington.
Below are exlusive highlights of Ward in action during his junior season.
Pack Pride will have more on Ward's commitment in the near future so stay tuned!
