Spence Likes the Pack

Pack Pride has the latest on Fort Walton Beach (FL) defensive tackle Akeem Spence and his interest in NC State.

Defensive tackle Akeem Spence is one of the top performers from Fort Walton Beach, Florida in recent years, and he is taking a long, hard look at the Wolfpack. The 6-1, 290-pound lineman is not closing in on a decision, but he is doing his research and finding out what he likes about different school.

Spence had a big junior year at Fort Walton Beach, recording 70 tackles and regularly finding himself in the backfield of opposing offenses. He currently holds offers from NC State, Illinois, Iowa State, South Florida, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Arkansas State, Northern Illinois, Troy and others.

"I've mostly been in touch with Iowa State, Florida State, Florida and UCF recently," Spence said. "I wouldn't say I have any favorites right now. I'm planning on taking my official visits later on."

Some might assume that if Florida or Florida State offers they would jump to the top of Spence's list. Don't be so sure.

"I don't know," he said. "I don't think that would be the case. I'm just going to wait and make my own decision."

NC State is one school that has been in hot pursuit of Spence. He hasn't spoken to the Pack's coaches in the past couple of weeks, but he has heard from them this summer and would love to learn more.

"I haven't talked to them recently but I talked to them earlier in the summer. I want to say it was Coach McCollum. NC State is known for having great defensive linemen like Mario Williams and all those guys, so they're one of my top choices.

"I'm pretty sure I'll take a visit up there. My coach, Coach Jones, was talking about that with me today. I'd like to take visits to NC State, Florida, Florida State and some others.

"Coach Haggins from Florida State has told me to get my test scores up, but the main thing Florida State is really considering right now is my height. I've put on ten pounds recently so I'm up to 290, so I'm just doing what I can."

Spence is rated the No. 69 defensive tackle in the nation by Scout.com.
