"I talked with a couple of people here lately and we thought that was the best decision for me to make so I committed to State today," said Payton. "I like the Raleigh area. I went down to their very first practice, and the coaches were real nice.
"The coaches were excited. They were happy to hear it."
At 6-4 and 190 pounds, Payton has tremendous size and he uses that to take advantage of smaller defensive backs in high school. However, the junior wideout also shows an impressive burst and the ability to run away from the defense.
In 2007, Payton tallied 51 catches for 822 yards and nine touchdowns. Those numbers come on top of a 21 reception, 411 yard effort as a sophomore.
"They stayed on me the entire time and that mattered to me. That definitely helped them."
Payton is the ninth player to commit to NC State in the 2009 class, and he is the first wide receiver. He picked the Wolfpack over offers from Duke and Wake Forest.
Pack Pride will have more on Payton's decision in the near future so stay tuned!
