Plant City (Fla.) Durant offensive lineman Cole Gilliam has been widely acknowledged to be one of the strongest prospects in Florida's Class of 2009 for a good while now. The massive tackle holds two offers and is hoping to add to that total.
At 6-5 and 310 pounds, Gilliam seems like a huge mismatch at the high school level and he is. That said, he has trimmed down considerably since last season and that has helped his game immensely.
"We're doing good," he explained. "We're 3-3 so we could be doing a lot better. It just seems like all the games we're losing are games where we shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties and stuff like that. We lost our first district game 21-16 because two touchdowns were called back because of penalties.
"I feel like I've been playing pretty well. Definitely better than last year. My quickness has improved a lot. I'm 20 pounds lighter this year than I was at this time last year. I feel like that's made me a lot quicker. I just went on a diet and it has helped."
Florida Atlantic and Elon have offered Gilliam and he's also hearing from NC State, Central Florida and Villanova. Where does the recruiting process stand right now?
"Well, I've taken an unofficial visit to NC State," he said. "I did that about three weeks ago when they played South Florida. I liked it a lot. They have a really nice campus and everything was good. I met the coaches and talked to them a little bit. It was the usual, just a really nice place. I like how hyped they were. It seemed almost like a pro facility and the weight room was great."
Villanova has told Gilliam that they do not plan on offering any scholarships to prospects until the end of October so it will not be long until he hears more from them. Idaho has also expressed a lot of interest, and Gilliam said he will likely take an official visit there. What about the Pack?
"They've told me I'm high up on their list. I'm one of the main offensive linemen they're looking at. They called me once and I've got to call them back now. They said I looked good. That was about two weeks ago. I don't have any favorites right now, so I'm just going to wait and see what happens."
