Boca Raton (FL) safety Brandan Bishop has flown under the recruiting radar of most analysts for much of the year. However, recently, his recruiting has taken off and for good reason.
At 6-1, 200 pounds with 4.66-second speed in the 40-yard dash, Bishop has blocked four kicks over the last two seasons, recorded 18 tackles in a contest two weeks ago, has four interceptions this year from his strong safety spot and collected four touchdowns as a starter at wide receiver. That production has helped propel his team to a 7-1 record and a shot at Dwyer High School this week for the district championship.
Several colleges have recently taken notice of the senior’s performance, including NC State. The Wolfpack faxed a written offer last week.
“Right now, I’ve got the offer from NC State,” said Bishop. “It was actually my coach, coach (Jimmie) Sutton who told me. He played for the Wolfpack last year. Coach Sutton coaches the secondary here and he’s a great coach and actually, he was the one who broke the news to me on Thursday. I was expecting a call from the coaching staff on Friday but I guess they didn’t have a chance to get around to it. Hopefully I’ll hear from them this week.”
In addition to NC State, Bishop already boasted a couple of earlier scholarships with two new schools jumping into the mix over the last two weeks.
“West Virginia called me on Thursday night and told me I had an offer and they’re supposed to fax that in sometime this week.
“I’m hearing a lot from Syracuse a lot right now and I think they’ll offer me sometime this week. Two weeks ago I got an offer from Western Michigan to go along with the offers I already had from Florida International and Air Force. The last week and a half have been really big for me.”
With his recruiting heating up, the Wolfpack appears to have established themselves as a team Bishop is keeping a close eye on. He admits he doesn’t know a lot about the Pack just yet but is looking forward to a visit to Raleigh in the near future.
“Initially, I’m really excited about the offer,” he said. “Coach Sutton speaks real highly of the program and he seems to think I’d be a perfect fit and the new coaching staff will like the kind of player that I am.
I’m planning on going up there for the last game of the season against Miami. Also, the thing about State is that I have a lot of family in North Carolina so it would be nice to be able to play in front of them.”
In addition to NC State, Bishop plans to visit Western Michigan and West Virginia over the coming weeks. For now, he says he’s in no rush to make a quick commitment.
“Right now, I’m just trying to take it in as much as I can to learn as much about each school as possible,” he said. “I’m going to take my time with my decision because I wasn’t one of those guys that was real publicized early. I didn’t get a lot of early offers so I haven’t been able to visit a lot of the schools. December should be a big month for me and then I can make my decision is January. I’ve just got to take it slow because it’ll be a family decision.”
Bishop projects as an academic qualifier and plans to major in Business.
