Haynes More Solid Than Ever

Pack Pride catches up with Dean Haynes after the completion of his senior season.

Cornerback Dean Haynes committed to the Wolfpack over the summer and remains one of NC State's more highly-touted recruits from the Class of 2009. The Tunnel Hill (Ga.) Northwest Whitfield County star had a big season and is looking forward to his future in Raleigh.

Haynes helped Northwest Whitfield to a 6-4 record during his senior campaign. They didn't make the playoffs so there was a lot left to be desired, but Haynes had a great year.

While playing behind center Haynes passed for more than 700 yards while rushing for 888 and accounting for 18 total offensive touchdowns. Defensively he recorded 61 tackles from his safety position.

When all was said and done, there were very few in-state awards that Haynes didn’t claim. He was selected as the all-area player of the year by The Daily Citizen. The Atlanta Journal Constitution named him to their class 4A all-state team and he was also selected to play in the North-South Classic.

The Wolfpack recruited the 5-11, 178-pound athlete as a defensive back, though he does not yet know whether he will play safety or cornerback.

"I just feel like I became a better leader throughout the year," Haynes told Pack Pride recently. "I like to lead by example. I'm not the kind of guy to really get in people's faces but I do my job."

Since committing to NC State in early August, Haynes has not reconsidered his decision. Watching the Pack finish the season strong with wins over Duke, Wake Forest, North Carolina and Miami has only served to solidify his commitment.

"I've talked to coach (Andy) McCollum recently and he said he's just ready to get me up there. He's trying to set up a visit for me sometime soon. I haven't been up there since camp so I'm ready.

"Pretty much everybody has backed off since I committed. I'm definitely solid. I followed them this year and I've been impressed. They started off pretty rocky but by the end of the year they did great, winning all their last games before the bowl game."
