Notes: NC State special team's coach and recruiting coordinator Jerry Petercuskie has been a busy man of late as the Wolfpack rounds out their 2009 recruiting class. Recently he was at South Brunswick High School in Southport, NC and didn't leave empty handed.

At 6-3, 255 pounds, defensive end A.J. Ferguson may not be a household name on a national level but he's a prospect that State fans have become quite familiar with over the last two months.

This past season Ferguson was a monster on both sides of the ball for South Brunswick and was a huge factor behind their deep run into the playoffs this year. A four-year starter and team captain, Ferguson was named all-conference for the second consecutive year after returning two interceptions for touchdowns and notching three defensive scores total. He also had 11 catches for 176 yards and four touchdowns from his tight end spot. On special teams, Ferguson had three blocked PAT's on the year.

South Brunswick head coach Gordon Walters told Pack Pride recently that NC State has landed a player that is as special off the field as he is on it.

“A.J. is the best defensive lineman that I have ever coached," said Walters. “He also has tremendous hands. A.J. runs well and might grow a few more inches. He also is a very coachable kid that goes hard every play and loves to win and is all about the team. A.J. is also a great citizen with impeccable character.”

Ferguson's decision to commit to NC State fulfilled a life-long dream.

“It was crazy,” said Ferguson. “It’s something that I’ve always dreamed about. Just considering where I came from and just being able to make it out. To know that I’m going to play football at the next level is just a crazy experience for me right now.”

Ferguson made several unofficial visits to State during the season and those trips helped pave the way towards his decision. The senior defensive end said he loved everything about his time spent in Raleigh.

“I just like the vibe they’ve got going on up there," he said. "I really loved the coaches up there, the players, the stadium, and the Wolfpack fans were unbelievable. I like how they ended up with a four game winning streak. So I really just like the feel I got when I was up there.

Coach Petercuskie, he just talked to me a lot about how they want positive players up there. He really likes me because of my humbleness and says I’m a good kid and athlete. He said he thought I would fit in real good with the NC State program.”

Ferguson is working towards meeting the academic requirements for admission as a freshman but said he earned A’s and B’s this semester.

Scouting Report: "One thing you see repeatedly when watching South Brunswick (Southport, NC) defensive end A.J. Ferguson is the talented senior making play after play in the opposition's backfield. He is skilled at consistently beating the offensive lineman across from him and penetrating into the backfield.

"Ferguson has very good size for a high school defensive end and while not the fastest prospect, he shows good quickness and lateral pursuit which allows him to make plays around the line of scrimmage.

"Ferguson also saw plenty of snaps this year at tight end which allows him to take advantage of his size and athleticism. Although his future college position is defensive end, he displays the overall football skills on offense that will translate to the other side of the ball.

"Although he will need time to get stronger and hone his skills, Ferguson is a solid player with upside who's best days lie ahead." -- Pack Pride Recruiting Analyst Steve Williams
