While much of the focus has been on the commitments landed by NC State over the weekend, the Pack also hosted a handful of prospects that had previously committed to State. One of those was High Point (NC) Central LB Rickey Dowdy .
The 6-2, 224 pound defensive end and linebacker thoroughly enjoyed his experience at NC State, and it made him even more convinced than before that he made the right decision in deciding to run with the Pack.
Dowdy committed to NC State all the way back in March and has not looked back since. That’s a decision he doesn’t regret, as it allowed him to focus on his senior season and last year of high school.
He spoke with Pack Pride after returning home to High Point from his official visit.
“Yes, I was at State this weekend there and it was good visit. We went out to eat (on Saturday) then left to hang out with the players. I talked to all of the coaches, really. They’re just telling me I need to come in ready to play. I’d say the highlight of the weekend was just chilling with the boys.”
Dowdy’s host for the weekend was freshman linebacker Sterling Lucas. The two had met before and according to Dowdy, got along very well. He went on to mention the flurry of commitments that took place in the aftermath of the visit.
“There were some uncommitted guys that went there and ended up committing,” he said. “It was two of them. Two of those guys ended up committing so that was pretty exciting.”
Dowdy also offered his thoughts on NC State’s turnaround during the 2008 campaign.
“I think we started coming together as a team towards the end of the season. That was the biggest thing for us. We just started playing together.”
Dowdy was recruited by defensive back’s coach Mike Reed. He is rated a three-star prospect and the No. 66 defensive end in the nation by Scout.com. Dowdy is expected to begin his career at linebacker for NC State.Scouting Report: "There could be an interesting tug of war between defensive line coach Keith Willis and linebackers coach Andy McCollum to decide exactly where Ricky Dowdy will play once he arrives at NC State for the 2009 season.
"Physically, Dowdy has the potential to add considerable size to his 6-3, 220 pound frame which means he could ultimately project at defensive end down the road. However, on film, Dowdy is a player that plays extremely well out in space. With his long strides, he doesn't appear to be moving that fast until you notice that no one seems to be able to get away from him.
"Another impressive aspect is his discipline. He doesn't get himself out of position and because of that, puts himself in a position to make plays consistently. Dowdy has the explosiveness to play defensive end but is also rangy enough to get a look at LB as well.
"He could certainly end up being one of the steals in the class of ‘09." - Pack Pride Recruiting Analyst Steve Williams
