Name: Asa Watson
Hometown: Rock Hill, South Carolina
High School: Rock Hill High School
Position: Tight End
Notes: Rock Hill (SC) tight end Asa Watson has been a huge priority for the NC State coaching staff over the last nine months and their hard work paid off Sunday with a commitment.
Watson had 18 catches for 400 yards as a senior and boasts a ton of upside. After official visits to Duke and Maryland, Watson made a trip to Raleigh this past weekend to check out the Wolfpack and that visit solidified his decision to run with the Pack.
"Yes sir, I committed to State," said Watson. "It just seemed like everything was right. I talked to the players and really had a good time. Russell (Wilson) was great and he was just a great guy.
"Sterling Lucas was cool too and they just told me how they made their decisions. I went home and prayed about it and talked to my parents. That's the best place for me and that's where I'm going."
Watson boasted offers from Maryland, Georgia Tech, Duke, Vanderbilt and Boston College in addition to NC State. He is rated a four star prospect and the No. 10 tight end in the nation by Scout.com. Watson was selected as a team captain for his South Carolina squad in this year's Shrine Bowl.
Recruited by NC State tight end's coach Jim Bridge, Watson is also strong in the classroom as he sports a 4.2 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Watson's athletic ability runs in the family. His father, Ken Watson, played football at Maryland and his brother, Ben Watson, played football collegiately at Georgia and currently plays tight end for the New England Patriots.
Coach Quote: "Asa is a student who is the epitome of what a teacher wants to teach and a coach wants to coach. He has the best attitude that you'll ever find in player. He will do whatever it takes to help this team to win.
"I've coached for 36 years now and Asa is at the top of the list when it comes to all of the players that I have had the chance to work with because of his incredible character and work ethic." -- Rock Hill Head Coach Joe Montgomery
Scouting Report: "Recruiting high school prospects is all about potential and Rock Hill (SC) tight end Asa Watson is loaded with it. At 6-4 and 210 pounds Watson obviously has a ways to go before he's ready to compete physically as a tight end on the Division-I level. However, with time, that shouldn't be an issue.
"His brother Ben, currently with the New England Patriots, plays at 255 pounds and there's no reason to think the younger Watson won't fill out to roughly the same size.
"While perhaps a step slower than his older brother, Watson more than makes up for it with toughness and desire. He is a fierce blocker that can deliver crushing blocks and is surprisingly strong for his size.
"When flexed out at receiver, Watson shows good route running skills and reliable hands. He is a handful for defenders because of his physical style. The experience at receiver should serve Watson well down the road as he develops into a pass-catching threat for the Wolfpack.
"As Watson matures and adjusts to the college game, the sky is the limit for how good he can become." -- Pack Pride Recruiting Analyst Steve Williams
