Scout Rank: #284 Wide Receiver
Size: 6-4, 190 pounds
Hometown: Anderson, SC
High School: T.L. Hanna High School

Projected position at NCSU: Wide Receiver

Accolades: Ranked by ESPN as the #61 wide receiver in the nation… an all-conference and all-area selection... selected to play in the North-South Game... recruited to NC State by tight ends coach Jim Bridge.

Stats: 51 catches, 850 yards, 10 touchdowns

Commit Date: 8/11/2008

Recruiting Scene: One of NC State's earlier commitments, Payton committed to the Wolfpack after considering several regional offers. He was the first wide receiver to verbal to NC State and did so over offers from Duke and Wake Forest.

T.L. Hanna Head Coach Kenya Fouch says: "Quintin is a great player and has been extremely productive for us. He is a hard worker, and I think he will have a very good career on the next level."

ESPN Evaluation: Payton has some real promise with his tall, thin frame and long arms. He runs very well, is smooth and fluid and shows excellent overall athleticism for a taller wide receiver. Has long arms and a wide catch radius. Is a big target in the short and intermediate range working against zone coverage. Changes directions well and flashes sound footwork when setting up breaks.

Is lanky and flexible so he is difficult to gauge for defenders trying to get a feel for him because he shows wiggle as a route runner. Locates soft spots when reads zone, does a nice job of avoiding contact when working the middle of the field and understands the spacing of defenses.

Has excellent foot speed and can get a clean release working against press coverage. Shows good body control when tracking the ball and can adjust to passes thrown outside frame. Is elusive enough to make the first defender miss and capable of producing after the catch. Has good hands, but also let's balls get into his frame too much too.

Needs significant time in the weightroom to help aid a free release off the line versus press coverage. Overall, Payton is a good receiver and one that will see his stock go up as a senior. Has the goods to develop into a redzone target too.
