Recruiting Scene: NC State targeted as one of their top offensive targets last spring and pursued him relentlessly until his commitment in January. Although he boasted several offers, Watson also had strong interest in Maryland, where his father played, and Duke. Watson's older brother, Ben, played with the Blue Devils. The Pack landed Watson's last official visit and the time he spent with fellow South Carolinian Sterling Lucas and current Wolfpack quarterback Russell Wilson were critical in securing his commitment.
Why NCSU? "It just seemed like everything was right. I talked to the players and really had a good time. Russell (Wilson) was great and he was just a great guy. Sterling Lucas was cool too and they just told me how they made their decisions. I went home and prayed about it and talked to my parents. That's the best place for me and that's where I'm going."
Rock Hill Head Coach Joe Montgomery: "Asa is a student who is the epitome of what a teacher wants to teach and a coach wants to coach. He has the best attitude that you'll ever find in player. He will do whatever it takes to help this team to win.
"I've coached for 36 years now and Asa is at the top of the list when it comes to all of the players that I have had the chance to work with because of his incredible character and work ethic."
Pack Pride Evaluation: Recruiting high school prospects is all about potential and Rock Hill (SC) tight end Asa Watson is loaded with it. At 6-4 and 210 pounds Watson obviously has a ways to go before he's ready to compete physically as a tight end on the Division-I level. However, with time, that shouldn't be an issue.
His brother Ben, currently with the New England Patriots, plays at 255 pounds and there's no reason to think the younger Watson won't fill out to roughly the same size.
While perhaps a step slower than his older brother, Watson more than makes up for it with toughness and desire. He is a fierce blocker that can deliver crushing blocks and is surprisingly strong for his size.
When flexed out at receiver, Watson shows good route running skills and reliable hands. He is a handful for defenders because of his physical style. The experience at receiver should serve Watson well down the road as he develops into a pass-catching threat for the Wolfpack.
As Watson matures and adjusts to the college game, the sky is the limit for how good he can become."
