Norfolk (VA) Lake Taylor linebacker Travis Williams may not have the lengthy offer list that some other prospects have but several schools have identified him as a prospect to keep an eye on.
NC State has extended a scholarship -- could that early interest help the Pack?
"Yes, I've got an offer from them," Williams said referring to NC State. "They offered me a long time ago. I don't really remember when it was but I've had that for a while.
"I've been talking to coach (Keith) Willis for a while. He's been recruiting me pretty hard. I know they like me a lot. That's a school I'll definitely be looking at."
Williams is hoping other schools decide to extend offers at some point in the near future as well. He's not just sitting back and waiting for it to happen, however. He has taken a proactive approach to get his name out there.
"As a matter of fact I just sent out some tape, so I should be hearing back from a lot of schools," he said. "I think some of them should offer once they see it. So far most schools have just been going off what other people have been saying, I think.
"This spring I think I'm gonna be going to UNC, Louisville, West Virginia and Virginia Tech. Maybe some others, too. It depends on what our football schedule looks like."
Williams said he has been receiving mail from all of those schools as well as Florida State, Clemson, LSU, Georgia and Alabama.
He recently attended a 7-on-7 passing camp at Rutgers University and said that went well.
"It was great," he commented. "I was doing my thing on both sides of the ball. I'm not sure if there were any coaches out there but I feel like I did a good job."
The 6-3, 200-pound linebacker runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds and has the kind of athleticism that coaches love from prospects at that position. He will undoubtedly need to put on some bulk in the weight room before he's ready to contribute at the college level, but he has plenty of time between now and when he enrolls.
As a junior for Lake Taylor he caught 32 balls for 575 yards and four touchdowns. Most of his work, however, was done on defense. There he recorded 78 tackles and 14 sacks.
In addition to NC State, Williams also holds offers from UNC, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Louisville and West Virginia among others.
