With visits behind him to Virginia, Maryland and Michigan State, Pennington (NJ) School Dontae Johnson made the trip down to Raleigh this past weekend to check out NC State. The 6-3, 185 pound safety earned a Wolfpack offer last November and was excited to finally see State in person.
“I actually got in on Thursday night and we left on Saturday,” said Johnson. “I was really impressed with the campus. All the facilities were really nice. I’m actually impressed with the new facilities they’ve built. That was a plus. They have a great coaching staff and I was really impressed by that. I definitely see myself coming back for another visit in the future just to check it out and experience the atmosphere.”
NC State defensive back’s coach Mike Reed is Johnson’s lead recruiter and has made a positive, early impression.
“Coach Reed is recruiting me. He’s a great guy and a great coach. He definitely knows what he’s talking about because he’s been there and done it. So he definitely has experience in what he’s teaching. He’s just a great person to sit down and talk to.”
In addition to the Wolfpack, Johnson has also landed scholarship offers from Maryland, Connecticut, Minnesota, Michigan State and Virginia. Despite having a half dozen pledges already, the rising senior says he’s in no rush to make a decision and has yet to formulate a favorite’s list.
“I’m still checking everybody out at this point so I don’t really have any favorites.
“Other than that, I’m just riding it out to see what happens because it’s too early from what I’ve seen to make a decision.”
Johnson also stars in basketball for Pennington and boasts a 3.8 GPA.
