Two Leaders for Allen

Although he's been under the radar early in the recruiting year, Wilmington (NC) New Hanover defensive end Vince Allen is getting his fair share of attention from college recruiters. Pack Pride has the latest.

Wilmington (NC) New Hanover defensive end Vince Allen is already on the radar of plenty of colleges, including NC State. The 6-2, 250-pounder is a force in the trenches and is one of NC State's top in-state targets at his position.

Allen claims that earlier in the recruiting process he had received offers from several schools, only to see that change when academic shortcomings became evident.

"I was supposed to have about five (offers) on the table earlier," he said. "(NC) State was one, South Carolina was one, and there were a few others. That was at the beginning of the year, when I had a 3.25 (GPA). I messed up in English and that really dropped me down. I guess I'll hear from them later on."

Despite that, schools remain persistent in pursuing Allen in the hopes that his academics will be put back in order. He recently attended a junior day at NC State. How did that go?

"Yeah, I went up there," he confirmed. "Actually it went really well. I liked it a lot. That was where I went to my first college game ... it was State-ECU. I've been to three games up there. They invited me up for the whole season, and then I went to their junior day. I think I'm going to their prospect camp this summer.

"The firs time I went there I really didn't get to talk to the coaches much. The first few times, actually. Then after recruiting really started up I started liking them a lot and I talked to them.

"I love NC State. They're real good. Since I've been up there I really like the environment and the coaches, and I really like where the program's going."

Allen has also visited Duke, South Carolina and Illinois. He plans on going to East Carolina in the near future as well.

"It's weird," he said. "No school is recruiting me at the position I'm at. Some want me at defensive tackle and some want me at linebacker. I could play with my hand on the ground but I also like playing in the middle."

As for favorites?

"I'd probably put State or Alabama up there at the top," he said.
