Four-Star QB Visits NC State

NC State hosted 4-star quarterback Pete Thomas last week and he gives Pack Pride the lowdown on how his visit went. Read on for the latest.

In the second half of Saturday’s spring game, NC State rolled out a freshman and walk-on at quarterback after starter Russell Wilson departed for an afternoon baseball game. Although 2009 signee Everett Proctor will join the Pack next season, it’s obvious the Wolfpack still needs to add talent at the position.

At this point in the recruiting process the player that appears to reside at the top of NC State’s wish-list of QB’s is El Cajon (CA) Valhalla High School standout Pete Thomas.

At 6-5, 200 pounds, Thomas boasts good size and the skill-set that should mesh perfectly in a pro-style attack. As a junior he completed 68% of his passes for 3,161 yards and 28 touchdowns against just eight interceptions. In the CIF championship game Thomas completed an amazing 25 of 33 passes for 308 yards. Those numbers and a ton of potential have the rising senior rated a four-star prospect and the No. 9 QB in the nation by

This past Wednesday Thomas was at NC State after a whirlwind tour of several college campuses and talked with Pack Pride about his recruitment in this Q&A.

Pete, you’ve been on a fairly extensive tour of schools recently. Which colleges have you had a chance to visit?

We had a two week spring break and I had a chance to see Arizona State, Southern Cal, Northwestern, NC State and Maryland. It was real busy.

So which schools have offered you so far?

I have offers from Arizona State, Northwestern and Maryland right now.

You were at NC State last Wednesday. How long did you get to visit?

We spent the whole day there. We got there at 8 o’clock and stayed all the way until 4:30. We got a tour and met with coach Bible. It was awesome.

Can you talk about some of the things you were able to do while you were at NC State?

We got a tour of the whole campus. We got to see where the players live. I met with coach Bible for about an hour and then with coach O’Brien for another 30 or 45 minutes. So, I got the facilities tour and all that stuff ,so it was awesome. It was awesome.

What were your impressions after having a chance to see everything and speak with the coaches?

The facilities there are unbelievable. They were some of the best I’ve seen so far. So that was a really good part. And the coaches, they were really nice, too. They run a pro-style offense and coach Bible seems like a really good coach. I mean, he coached a lot of quarterbacks when he was at Boston College and I think coach O’Brien, from his military background, I think he just brings a lot of poise and leadership to the program.

Is the style of offense going to be a big factor in your decision?

The type of offense is going to be huge. That’s one of the big things for me is the type of offense. Also, coaching style and academics, those are the three main things. But definitely the type of offense is a big thing. I’m not going to go to a school that runs a zone-read option and have the quarterback run 20 times a game.

Will distance be a factor in where you decide to go?

No, I don’t think so. It might be nice to be close to home you know but no, I’m definitely open to all schools. So going out to North Carolina or the east coast will not be a problem.

Did your parents make the trip and how do they feel about you playing football away from home?

My mom and dad were with me on the visit. They think it would be good for me to get away. They wouldn’t be able to come to every game but they actually would want me to get away and experience college on my own.

State normally extends offers to quarterbacks after seeing them throw in person. Did they talk about that at all?

They said either they’re going to come out (and watch a workout) or I’ll have to go back to one of their camps.

So who are your top schools at this point?

Right now my top three schools are only the ones that have offered. But NC State was awesome. If I did get an offer from them they’d go right to the top. I mean, USC, UCLA, Oregon State maybe even Notre Dame (would also move up if they offered).

Do you have a time-line for making a decision?

I’m definitely going to commit before the start of my season. So that’s what I’m shooting for but if I go to a school and feel really good about it then I would commit.
