Olney (MD) Good Counsel safety Frank Tamakloe has quietly collected a half dozen scholarship offers through the early stages of the recruiting year. At 6-3, 185 pounds with 4.45-second speed in the 40-yard dash, Tamakloe has tremendous instincts for the safety position and is a solid tackler. Among the schools that have taken an early interest in his talents is NC State. The Pack was one of the first schools to offer and Tamakloe had a chance to see State up close this past weekend. He talked with Pack Pride about the visit.
“ I was at practice on Friday just watching,” said Tamakloe. “I got in about 12:00 on Friday and met with coach Willis. We talked for a while and that was pretty good. Then, they put me on the campus tour so I got to see the Centennial campus and that was pretty nice. I got to see the dorms and they were nice because I hadn’t seen that before.
“We came back for practice and I watched coach Reed and coach Archer do their drills. I watched that for a good while and then I had a chance to talk to some of the players and all of them were real nice and telling me how much they liked NC State. They were all pretty cool.”
Tamakloe followed that up with a visit for the Wolpack’s spring game on Saturday.
“Since we stayed at the hotel across the street from the stadium, we came in early Saturday morning to talk with the coaches. Then the junior day started. It was pretty cool. I was with Brice Laughlin. He’s also looking at NC State. They’re about to offer him. We were talking and just bonded so that was pretty good.
“It was crazy because I went down to UNC and there weren’t that many people there but I think there was close to 20,000 at State. I was looking around and saw the RV’s and then with all the people around the building and all the red, I didn’t realize how serious about football they were. They like their football a lot.”
So what did Tamakloe think of NC State after finishing his visit?
“I liked it a lot. I haven’t really seen a facility like that yet. I haven’t been to too many colleges yet but I haven’t seen a facility like that. And then with the coaches, they were real genuine, down to earth people.”
With offers on the table from NC State, Maryland, UNC, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Northwestern, Tamakloe is taking his time and thoroughly researching all of his options. He’s planning on a few more visits to help him with his decision.
“I’m going to try to visit Northwestern and Wisconsin in the same swing. I’m probably going to West Virginia and then Virginia when I go to the Nike Camp. I’m definitely going to come back to North Carolina soon, maybe to UNC, Duke and NC State in the same trip. I just went to State this time but I think I'll see them all next time.”
Tamakloe added that he’s still very open to all schools although a final decision may come before the end of the summer.
“I don’t really have any favorites right now. But I’m looking forward to making a decision soon, definitely before the start of the season.”
