"I've been hearing from all kinds of colleges," said Farmer. "I've got four offers so far. Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Clemson, and [NC] State have offered me. The first I got was from Tennessee and the latest one came from State.
"I'm also hearing from colleges like Duke, the University of North Carolina, Marshall, Cincinnati, and Illinois."
Farmer had a chance to showcase his athletic ability over the weekend as he attended the Havelock Shrine Bowl Combine and the Scout.com Charlotte Combine. In Charlotte, Farmer checked in at 6-foot-2 and 257 pounds and posted a 4.98 40-yard dash.
He lined up at tight end and defensive end for South Columbus, totaling 15 catches for 275 yards and three scores while adding 55 tackles defensively.
"The colleges haven't really said which position they want me to play," said Farmer. "I think I can play either tight end or defensive end though. It doesn't matter to me."
NC State assistant Jerry Petercuskie is recruiting Farmer, and he has done a good job putting the Wolfpack in the picture.
"State just offered me last week," said Farmer. "I really like their coaching staff. I went up with my coach and some of my family for two games last year... when they played ECU and William & Mary. I liked their atmosphere and their facilities."
Farmer already has a top five and while he maintains there isn't a leader, he does have a timeframe for making a decision in mind.
"My top five would be Florida, Clemson, Virginia Tech, NC State, and Southern Cal," said Farmer. "I just like the football at those schools and how they play defense. It seems like they are all good places to go.
"I'm going to try and take some visits this summer because I think I'll probably be deciding during my senior season."
Here are Farmer's thoughts on his five favorites.
Florida: "They are a strong team and have speed all over. They win a lot of games and have a great coach."
Virginia Tech: "I like the defense and the coaching staff. They have a fast defense and go to a bunch of bowl games."
Clemson: "They win games and have a young coaching staff... which is good. I also like the facilities and the atmosphere."
Southern California: "They are all real fast, and it seems like a high-energy program. They have good running backs and a really good coach."
NC State: "Their team has a strong work ethic, and I like their defense. Their coaches seem to get you fired up before the game, and it's a really good college. Plus I like their strength and conditioning program."
