Virginia has already offered one Charlotte Christian (N.C.) rising senior prospect and has serious interest in another. 6-2, 210-pound linebacker Kelby Brown spoke with primary recruiter Wayne Lineburg last week and learned more about UVa's interest in his talents.
"Coach Lineburg came in and came to one of our practices [last] Wednesday," Brown said. His teammate, LB/RB Ty Linton, has been offered by UVa already. "We had a 7-on-7 and my coach put me through some individual workouts. Coach Lineburg was there along with two coaches from Duke and one from Marshall. He said he couldn't offer me on the spot, but he was very impressed and interested. He wants to get me up for a one day camp."
Brown, who has received official offers from Duke, Indiana, Syracuse and Wisconsin, saw action at inside and outside linebacker last season as a junior. A captain, he was named the team's defensive MVP last year. He has versatility in terms of the specific linebacker position he may play on the next level, as some programs like him for inside while others see him playing on the outside.
"The first half of last year I played outside linebacker and the second half I play inside linebacker," Brown said. "All coaches are saying different stuff. The Virginia coach said he could see me inside. Other coaches say outside because that's what they've seen mainly."
Brown has interest in the Cavaliers, but camping in Charlottesville does not appear likely at the moment.
"Virginia is a big interest of mine for several reasons. For one, they have good football," Brown said. "Secondly, they have great academics. Also, Virginia is a neighbor state. But I've already looked at camp dates and I'll be gone that whole time. I'm going to try to make it, but if I can't there is not much I can do.
"I'm only going to go to three camps at the most, I think. I'm going to NC State. One of the coaches there told me they are really going to recruit me hard. He wants me to come to camp to see what I can do. If I have a good camp, he said there is a good chance they'll offer me. I also kind of want to go to Vanderbilt. Other than that, I don't have anything planned."
There is a favorite right now for Brown, who mentioned the possibility of committing by the end of July. He would like to have the decision made before the start of his senior season.
"I'd say Duke is probably my favorite," Brown said. "I've been there twice. I liked it and the coaches are awesome."
