Tom O’Brien’s 2009 football camp kicks off on June 19 and the battle for a Wolfpack offer at the quarterback position should be an interesting one. NC State has a tradition of offering only after watching the QB’s in person and this method helped the Pack land commitments from Mike Glennon in 2008 and Everett Proctor in 2009.
Pack Pride takes a look at several of the major players that will compete for the Wolfpack’s initial offer at the quarterback spot.
Peter Thomas...6-5, 218 pounds...El Cajon, Ca...Rating...4-star
Notes....Thomas visited NC State earlier this year and raved about the trip. That visit helped solidify the Pack on Thomas’ radar and while not technically listed as a favorite, NC State is in pretty good position here.
Offensive coordinator Dana Bible recently traveled to see Thomas work out in person since he would not be able to camp at NC State due to a scheduling conflict. The rising senior reportedly did quite well although an offer can’t be extended until all of the other QB’s are evaluated.
The main competition for Thomas will certainly be Southern Cal should they decide to offer. Minus a Trojan offer, Arizona State will be a team to watch. If the Pack ultimately offers then State will certainly press for a commitment in order to build their offensive class around him.
Tyler Brosius...6-3, 230 pounds...Waynesville, NC...Rating...3-star
Notes...Brosius is North Carolina’s top rated drop back QB and has landed offers from Pittsburgh, Maryland, Central Florida and Western Carolina. Virginia is also making a huge push although it is unknown whether they have currently offered.
There is no doubt that Brosius is very high on NC State after making a couple of unofficial visits to Raleigh earlier in the year. Should the Pack offer, it is thought that State could emerge as the team to beat and a quick commitment is certainly possible.
However, the question may very well be whether Brosius is willing to wait the process out for a few more weeks or if he wants to jump on one of his current offers in order to secure his spot.
The Dark Horse
Ed Sullivan...6-1, 185 pounds...Boca Raton, Fla...Rating...unrated
Notes...Sullivan is expected to be at camp and is a prospect we’re very excited to watch. Despite being unranked, he actually boasts several more offers than Brosius. He currently holds pledges from Southern Miss, Kansas State, Wake Forest, Iowa State, Rutgers, Florida International, Miami of Ohio and Western Michigan.
Sullivan doesn’t boast prototypical size and is more of a dual threat QB. However, he is a solid passer and should be a strong candidate for an offer from NC State.
Sullivan happens to be friends with 2009 Wolfpack signee Brandan Bishop. Bishop told Pack Pride that Sullivan’s father is extremely high on the NC State coaching staff.
Synjyn Days...6-0, 192 pounds...Powder Springs, Ga...Rating...3-star
Notes...Since visiting NC State earlier this year, the Wolfpack has been the team to beat for Days. The Pack has promised Days an opportunity to work out at QB and that’s clearly the position he would like to play in college.
There’s no questioning Days’ athleticism but he’ll need a very good showing if he’s to land an offer at QB. Should it not work out at quarterback, it certainly wouldn’t be surprising to see State offer as an athlete. The question will be whether Days will be okay with that or whether he’ll wait the process out to see if anyone else will offer as a QB.
It should be mentioned that State is also evaluating Days’ brother and a package deal can’t be ruled out.
