O'Brien: 'They are Still Learning'

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Tom O'Brien met with the media following Thursday's practice to discuss the upcoming game against Gardner-Webb.

"I think they are still learning... it was only Audie Cole's second game and Dwayne had a little experience next year. It's still an evolution process."

"I think Ray Michel has made pretty good strides because he's played a lot now and he's much more comfortable I think than those other two might be."

"When you don't recognize things you tend to be a little slow. When [Cole] knows where he's going and he recognizes then he's playing a lot faster. A lot of that will come with experience."

"[Mattes] is getting better. From his first couple of plays at South Carolina, he evolved through that game and certainly felt much more comfortable last week. He's the kind of guy, because of his abilities, will continue to get better as the season goes on."

"[Lemon] is still learning what we're doing. I think he has good natural instincts and that has shown up. It's his first time in this defense. If he has one thing to do and knows what he's doing he goes fast and goes about getting it done... only time will tell. He's got the ability to be a good football player."

"You never know who's going to play or what they are going to do until they get here and you watch them and see which guys can handle situations... I think you play however many guys you have to play and we're fortunate that we have five guys who are pretty good players and seem to be able to handle it after two games."
