Tight end/defensive end WillTye was a busy man for his Salisbury (CT) squad in 2009. The 6-4, 235 pound two-way prospect made his mark whether it be on offense, defense or special teams.
Lining up on offense, Tye finished the season with approximately 44 catches for 587 yards and six touchdowns. Playing on the defensive line, he notched 26 tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble. Tye even contributed on special teams- returning 12 kickoffs for 383 yards (31.9 yards per return) including one return for 95 yards.
Although he hasn’t received a ton of press over the last couple of months, he has quietly picked up offers from NC State, Florida State, Wyoming and Temple. This past weekend he was in Raleigh for his first official visit. Tye was able to watch to Wolfpack’s come from behind win over UNC and appeared to enjoy his opportunity to see State up close.
“The visit went pretty good,” said Tye. “They showed me all the facilities, which are really new. I got to meet the staff and they let me know how they’ve all been together for awhile. Of course, I went to the game and that was pretty good. The atmosphere at the game was unreal. It was the best I’ve ever been to. Darryl Cato-Bishop hosted me on my visit.”
So what was his overall impression on NC State and where does the Pack project him on the next level?
“I felt pretty good about it (NC State’s program). Even with their record, they fought to the end against Carolina and that impressed me.
“I like playing tight end (the best). NC State is telling me that I could play either defense or offense.”
So where is Tye headed next with one official visit under his belt?
“I don’t have any other visits set up right now but I should in the next few days or so. Right now, I’m looking at scheduling visits with Florida State and Miami and that’s about it. I’m still pretty much open. I’m hoping to make a decision in late December or early January.”
Tye is rated a two-star prospect by Scout.com.
