Notes: NC State landed a big commitment yesterday when Shelby (NC) Crest athlete Reggie Wilkins committed to the Wolfpack after backing off his verbal to North Carolina.

Wilkins originally committed to North Carolina over the summer after considering offers from the Tar Heels, NC State, Clemson, Colorado, East Carolina, and Marshall among others.

However, he recently started to reconsider his decision and decommitted on Sunday.

"I think I did it too early," Wilkins told Pack Pride Sunday night. "My brother told the Carolina coaches that I was decommitting so I've done that now. I've been thinking about it for a while now."

Tuesday afternoon Crest head coach Roy Kirby released a statement from Wilkins announcing the Charger standout had officially committed to NC State.

"I wanted to play for coach (Tom) O'Brien," Wilkins said in the prepared statement. "I've become pretty good friends with this year's recruits and some of the guys that are already there."

While he didn't confirm his decision to commit to NC State on Sunday night, Wilkins did inform us that he has a good relationship with the current crop of Wolfpack recruits.

"I think it's going to be State," Wilkins said on Sunday. "I get along good with all their recruits, and I like the players already there.

"I've been talking with [Tyler] Brosius, the quarterback commitment, and David Amerson. I also got to talk with other guys like [Tony] Creecy and [Rob] Crisp. I've been talking with Rashard Smith, the freshman corner, some too... I like all of them."

As a senior Wilkins played strictly quarterback for Crest, rushing for 792 yards and eight touchdowns while passing for 392 yards and another four scores.

NC State is recruiting Wilkins as a wide receiver and cornerback and also indicated that he would have a chance to return kicks.

Wilkins has been selected to participate in the 2009 Shrine Bowl where he is expected to have a chance to play wide receiver.

Pack Pride will have more from Wilkins and Crest head coach Roy Kirby in the near future, but here's your chance to catch the three-star prospect in action!
