As a senior Wilkins played strictly quarterback for Crest, rushing for 792 yards and eight touchdowns while passing for 392 yards and another four scores.
"It's a big change, moving from quarterback to receiver, but I'm getting it down," said Wilkins. "I played wide receiver some my 10th grade year, but that was about it. I did play it at the camps and combines... I'm getting the hang of it. It's not like I'm starting from scratch so I have an idea."
Wilkins has a chance to make plays every practice against high-major defensive backs. Starting for North Carolina in the defensive backfield is David Amerson (NC State), A.J. Marshall (Wake Forest), and Keenan Allen, and Wilkins as found himself matched up with each of them. Amerson has particularly impressed Wilkins with his play.
"It's rough going against those guys," said Wilkins. "They are all good. You've got to work every single play and don't push... don't stop working to get open and make a play.
"David is good... he's real good. His intelligence sticks out to me. He's always at the right place at the right time... he seems to know every route we're running."
In a somewhat quiet week, much of the talk on the recruiting scene has been about Wilkins. He committed to North Carolina several months back but decommitted from the Tar Heels following their loss to NC State. A day later he publicly pledged to the Wolfpack.
"I guess the depth at the receiver position played a role in my decision," said Wilkins. "I think I have a shot at more playing time as soon as I get to State.
"When I committed to coach McCollum he was jumping up and down and excited. When I was at the State-Carolina game, I was talking to coach O'Brien about it, and he just hugged me. He said he doesn't just hug everybody so that made me feel good about my decision."
Although Wilkins maintains that he's committed to NC State, he plans on visiting two other programs in January before finalizing his decision on Signing Day.
"I've got Louisville on the 8th, UNC on the 15th, and State on the 22nd," he stated. "It's kind of a deal where I'll know for sure after I take all the visits. I want to be sure of my decision."
