2004 Prospect * LB Michael Briggs

February finds the Class of 2004 football recruits making plans for their senior season. That is the case with Gastonia Ashbrook's Michael Briggs. TSW caught up with the two way starter to check the status of his recruitment, future plans, and his team's recent State Championship.
Update: Career stats and awards added.

Ashbrook kicked a 28-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining to give the Green Wave a 19-18 win over Greensboro Dudley in the 3AA championship game at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. Michael Briggs was a vital part of Ashbrook's State Championship run where he played both ways. We asked Michael what winning the title meant to him. "It was really exciting the way we won it in the last seconds. Everybody, all my teammates helped win that game. I was happy to be a part of it."

While Michael may be modest, let there be no doubt who helped lead the team to victory. In the Championship game, he rushed for 62 yards on 10 carries with one touchdown. He was named Ashbrook's outstanding offensive player for the game. He also did his part on defense, playing linbacker, where he had 8 tackles (3 solo, 5 assist) with 2 being for losses.

While Briggs may of been recognized for his offensive contributions in the State Championship, there is no doubt about where he will line up at the next level. Michael is being recruited as a middle linbacker by every top program in the region. His early list includes UNC, South Carolina, NC State, Tennessee and Clemson.

Spring and summer camps include a trip to the Nike combines as well as summer visits to UNC and NC State. Briggs had a very good showing at the Nike Camp in Chapel Hill last April. He turned in a 4.6 forty time and an even more impressive 4.5 shuttle. He also has a 29" vertical jump.

After a starting the season 1-3, Ashbrook went on one of the most memorable runs in 2003, winning 10 of 11 and the last 8 to win the State Title.

Michael is a 6'1" 220 pound insider linebacker. He has been a starter since his freshman year and also has played starting fullback since his sophomore year.
